Manjanggul Cave

( 2 Votes )
Manjanggul Cave 5.0 out of 5 based on 2 votes.
Manjanggul Cave is the longest lava tube in the world. It is 5 meters wide, between 5 to 10 meters high and is over 13 km long. It is one of the best lava tunnels in the world as well as a designated natural monument. A lava tunnel is formed when the lava that was deep in the ground spouts from the peak and flows to the surface. This popular cave at Jeju island has a variety of interesting structures inside including the lava tube tunnels and 70cm lava stalagmites.
Manjanggul Cave is open to the public, but visitors are only allowed to enter the first kilometer of the cave. Compared to the air outside, the cave is cool (at a temperature of 11~21C) and quite humid. The ground is abit wet and uneven. You will be surprised that there is no walkway through most of the cave to both protect people from tripping and to prevent damage to the caves.
There are rare animals such as bats living in the tunnel, which makes this tunnel valuable for researchers as well.
