Jeju Island is one of the most stunning islands in Korea as well as in the world and Seongsan Ilchulbong is one of the best example of what makes it so lovely. Located on the eastern seaboard of Jeju Island and claimed to seem like a enormous ancient castle, Seongsan Ilchulbong, (also known as ‘Sunrise Peak’), is an archetypal tuff cone created by hydrovolcanic eruptions upon a shallow seabed about 5,000 years ago. The summit (182m) is shaped like a punchbowl, though there’s no crater lake here because the volcanic rock is so permeable. Going up the to the summit only takes about 20 minutes and it is the dream of many Koreans to climb up to catch the spectacular sunrise from the peak.

The northern and southeastern side of the crater are cliffs, but the northwestern side is a grassy hillside that links to Seongsan Village (Seongsanpo). Seongsan Ilchulbong is easy to access both by bus or car. For those who are driving, just make your way down National Road #12 towards Seongsan. You will pass through the small towns of Gujwa and Jocheon on the way. It will only takes about an hour. If you are traveling by bus, the bus fare is 3,000 won per person. Take the Seongsan Ilchulbong bus from the Jeju City terminal. It will only take you about an hour and a half by bus from Jeju City to Seongsan Ilchulbong.
